FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • What is the minimum age to take a first aid or CPR class?
Unless listed in the prerequisite for the course, there is no minimum age requirement. The participant must, however, be able to read at the 8th grade level and have the physical stature and stamina to demonstrate the skills learned.

  • What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, loose clothing that will allow kneeling and lying on the floor. Please bring swim attire for aquatics courses.

  • What kind of participation is needed for the class?
Students are required to actively participate by demonstrating lifesaving and first aid skills, as well as pass a written exam with a score of 80% or better. Most classes require physical activities such as kneeling, moving about on the floor, and using physical effort to perform certain skills. If you have a medical condition that might prevent you from taking part in the sessions, we recommend you consult with your physician prior to enrollment. For multi-session classes, students are required to attend all class sessions to receive certification. If you are unable to perform ANY of the activities, you will not be able to become certified.

  • Can I bring someone to the class with me (child, parent, friend)?
No, childcare services are not available. Guests/visitors are not permitted in the classrooms. Please make appropriate arrangements prior to class.

  • What if I’m late to class?
Class starting times are firm; please report to class on time. Late arrivals may not be admitted. Ending times are approximate and may vary depending on attendance.

  • Am I allowed to retake a course if I fail the test?
If a student does not meet the passing requirements for a course, he or she may take a challenge course one time at no additional charge. Students who do not meet the passing requirements for a challenge course must repeat the course at their own expense. * This does not apply to instructor courses.

  • What if I need to cancel or transfer a class?
If you are unable to attend the class on the date you registered, we will transfer you to another class (with available space) if you contact us at least 72 hours, or three business days, prior to the (first) class date. We will allow one transfer at no additional charge. For each additional transfer requested, there will be a $15 administration fee.

  • Why does the American Red Cross charge for some classes?
The American Red Cross is a non-profit organization funded by the United Way and donations from the community. Many of our services, such as disaster relief, are free to those who need them. We charge a fee for our courses in order to recover some of our costs and maximize the use of our charitable dollars.

The American Red Cross is committed to providing basic safety courses regardless of the individual’s ability to pay. Scholarships are not available for instructor-level or job required courses, but may be provided for other courses based on financial need. For more information on how to obtain a scholarship, please call Health and Safety Customer Service at (614) 251-1444.

  • What is the refund policy?
If you need to cancel your enrollment in a class, a full refund, less a $15 administration fee (per class, per person), will be given, if you notify us at least 72 hours, or 3 business days, prior to the first day of the class you are scheduled to attend. There will be no refund if you do not attend the class in which you were enrolled or to which you were transferred.
